Matthew WelchCarly Rae Jepsen previously revealed her new album would be heavily influenced by ‘80s pop music, but now she’s explaining why.
She tells MTV that she was first inspired to go full throwback after seeing ‘80s pop queen Cyndi Lauper at a festival in Japan last summer. She said witnessing Cyndi in action convinced her that she had to make an album filled with ‘80s-tinged hits because of their “timeless” quality.
“I was listening to the songs and something kind of hit me just like this is when pop was at its finest,” she explains to MTV. “It’s like the purest, emotional ‘80s and I want to make an album that hints at that because the songs are so timeless. I would put out ‘Girls Just Wanna Have Fun’ today and I wouldn’t change a bloody thing, so I think that’s where it all began for me where I was like, ‘All right, that’s what I’m gonna do.’”
Carly, who released her new single “I Really Like You” this week, says she’s still in the process of narrowing down which songs will make the final track list of her new album which is set to be released this summer. Her video for "I Really Like You," starring Tom Hanks, will premiere at 10:15 p.m. ET/PT tonight on BravoTV.com's The Daily Dish.
