Eva Pentel for Hunger TVNathan Sykes, formerly of the British boy band The Wanted, is officially launching his solo career.
The 21-year-old spoke about his new musical direction in an interview with U.K. fashion publication Hunger TV. “From being one fifth of a group to being a soloist, there is always the chance to surprise people as they are only now seeing 100% of me for the first time,” Nathan says. “It’s like a second, first impression and whereas I don’t necessarily think it’s important to change people’s perceptions, I do think it’s exciting that people won’t just see me as ‘the young one in The Wanted’ and can have the freedom to judge me as an individual and not just ‘that bloke from that band.’”
Nathan reveals that his debut album will arrive later this year and the first single will be released this spring. He also confirms collaborations with hitmakers Harmony Samuels, Babyface and Diane Warren.
“Working with Diane Warren and Babyface were two of the most surreal days of my life,” he said. “There is never a dull moment with Diane and she is one of my favorite people on the planet and the session with Babyface produced probably the most honest and emotional song I’ve ever written.”
The Wanted scored hits with songs like “Glad You Came” and “Chasing the Sun,” and even starred in an E! reality show together called The Wanted Life. During the height of their fame, Nathan dated Ariana Grande, but the two called it quits in 2013. The Wanted decided to take a hiatus in January of last year in order to pursue solo endeavors. They did not rule out reuniting in the future.
Nathan’s the first member of the group to strike out on his own. The other members -- Max George, Siva Kaneswaran, Jay McGuiness and Tom Parker -- have yet to announce solo plans.
