How do we know that OneRepublic's Ryan Tedder is a songwriting genius? Because unlike most writers, he doesn't have to slave away in the studio to come up with a song: for him, ideas for hits simply "fall from the clouds." Exhibit A: the band's current single, "Love Runs Out."
"Love Runs Out" is a song that didn't originally appear on OneRepublic's album Native -- they put it out after the fact, after Ryan finally finished writing it, and realized he had something great on his hands. As Ryan explains, he had started the tune quite some time ago, but was never able to complete it.
"When I wrote it, it was right before Coachella a coupla years ago," he tells ABC News Radio. "It's kinda my song about music. And I couldn't finish it. And I was working on the U2 album in Malibu in January, driving to the studio, [and] the song came on my playlist."
"I hadn't heard it in a year," he recalls, "and out of nowhere, the entire chorus literally fell from the clouds, into the car."
So Ryan did what any self-respecting songwriter would do. "I pulled over to the side of the road, recorded it on my iPhone, and called my manager," he says. "And I said, 'I might wanna switch gears, I have this song...' and here we are now!"
OneRepublic initially planned to release a song called "I Lived" as the second single from Native, but "Love Runs Out" took its place. In addition to finding it on Native, you'll find "I Lived" on the upcoming soundtrack for the movie The Giver, along with a brand-new OneRepublic song, "Ordinary Human."
