Zedd Talks Ariana Grande's "Break Free," Scooter Braun Says We'll Be "Blown Away" by Her VMA Performance

The way Zedd tells it, he was hanging out backstage with his parents at a showcase where various artists on his record label were performing.  When Ariana took the stage to sing, he couldn't see her, but he sure could hear her...and that's what sold him.

"We didn't know who it was, but everyone was like, 'Oh, wow, this girl's great!'" he tells ABC News Radio. " And I found out that it was her. So I told my team that I would love to work with her, which is usually not that easy -- you know, you can't just work with whoever you want!"

But coincidentally, a few weeks later, Zedd says, Ariana's team reached out to him.  "[They] asked if I could imagine working with Ariana," he tells ABC News Radio. "And for me that was, like, perfect. That was what I wanted so, yeah, I'm really lucky this happened!"

As for whether or not Ariana was comfortable putting her voice on an EDM song like "Break Free," Zedd says, "She probably wasn't open to it before, but she really loved the song and I think for her that kind of opened the door, and I know that she really loves it...We shot a video and I could tell how much she was enjoying it.  It's really a different feeling, a different vibe."

"I think it's a great experience for her and I'm really happy that she did take that step and let me in that world," he adds.

The video for "Break Free" was released Tuesday night. It features Ariana battling aliens, floating weightless in a spaceship, shooting rockets out of her chest to destroy a robot and dancing on the bridge of a spaceship with an assortment of intergalactic characters and Zedd at the controls.

Zedd and Ariana are both nominated for Moonmen at the MTV Video Music Awards later this month, but it's not clear if they'll be performing "Break Free" together or not.  Ariana might also perform "Problem" -- since Iggy Azalea also will be there -- or other tracks from her upcoming album My Everything.  Whatever she'll be doing, though, her manager, Scooter Braun, says it'll be memorable.

"I think everyone's going to be blown away by what we do at the VMAs," he told ABC News Radio. "A lotta music, all at once."  (AUDIO IS ABC 1-ON-1)
